Discover the Anatomy of a Mug

Have you ever stopped to think about what makes up your favorite mug? Let's take a closer look at the anatomy of a mug to appreciate the design and functionality behind this everyday item.

Handle

The handle of a mug is not just for decoration—it serves a crucial purpose. The handle provides a comfortable grip for the user, allowing them to hold the mug securely without burning their hands on hot beverages. Handles come in various shapes and sizes, designed to fit different hand sizes and preferences. They also add character to a piece (see here, here, here, and here), or they can be incorporated into the vessel, as in a squeeze-side handle (see here and here).

Body

The body of a mug is typically made of ceramic, porcelain, glass, or even metal. This part of the mug holds the liquid and is often adorned with decorative elements or designs. The size and shape of the body can vary, influencing the mug's capacity and overall aesthetic appeal.

Rim

A mug is a very personal vessel, as the rim of a mug is where you place your lips to take a sip of your favorite drink. Mugs can have different rim styles, such as a rolled rim for added durability or a flared rim for easy drinking. The design of the rim affects the way hot liquid flows into your mouth, so the maker needs to pay close attention to this detail.

Base

The base of a mug provides stability and support. A flat, sturdy base ensures that the mug sits securely on flat surfaces without tipping over. Most, but not all, of the mugs sold at Studio at 432 favor the flat base, in lieu of a footed base, for this reason. Some mugs have a wider base for added stability, such as a volcano-form mug, while others have a narrower base for a more elegant look (see here and here) .

Glaze

The glaze of a mug is not just for aesthetics—it also serves a functional purpose. The glaze is a glass-like coating applied to the mug's surface to make it waterproof and easy to clean. It also adds a layer of protection to the ceramic or porcelain body, preventing it from absorbing liquid and developing stains, odors, or mold (yuck!).

Next time you reach for your favorite mug, take a moment to appreciate the thought and craftsmanship that went into its design. Each component plays a vital role in ensuring that your drinking experience is enjoyable and comfortable.
