Handle

Body

Rim

A mug is a very personal vessel, as the rim of a mug is where you place your lips to take a sip of your favorite drink. The design of the rim affects the way hot liquid flows into your mouth, so the maker needs to pay close attention to this detail.

Base

The base of a mug provides stability and support. A flat, sturdy base ensures that the mug sits securely on flat surfaces without tipping over. Most, but not all, of the mugs sold at Studio at 432 favor the flat base, in lieu of a footed base, for this reason. Some mugs have a wider base for added stability, such as a volcano-form mug, while others have a narrower base for a more elegant look (see here and here) .

Glaze

The glaze of a mug is not just for aesthetics—it also serves a functional purpose. The glaze is a glass-like coating applied to the mug's surface to make it waterproof and easy to clean. It also adds a layer of protection to the ceramic or porcelain body, preventing it from absorbing liquid and developing stains, odors, or mold (yuck!).
